(Director’s note: I’ve been meaning to get back to the far side of Asia for the first time in six years. In the meantime, guest blogger Elizabeth Long gives some tips for readers on where to get started.)

Whilst it may often be overlooked in favor of more popular European destinations like Greece and Italy, Asia has plenty to offer any traveler and should definitely be on your list of top destinations. With its diverse landscapes, cultures and food, the continent has something for everyone. Whether you’re interested in adventure-packed hikes or relaxing days on a beach, there are plenty of countries and cities waiting to be discovered.

In this post, we explore our three picks of places to visit in Asia that everybody should experience at least once in their life.

Singapore

With its reputation for truly amazing street food, Singapore has popped onto the radar of many travelers in the last few years. Hawker stalls are widely seen across the city, offering everything from budget eats to Michelin-starred stands. The range of options to suit every budget and variety of cuisines mean that it’s easy to go to Singapore just to eat.

But for those who don’t have bottomless stomachs, there’s still plenty to keep you entertained. The country has four official languages and welcomes people from all over the world, making it a real melting pot of cultures to enjoy. Singapore offers both electric nightlife and stunning nature reserves, meaning that you can party all night and then take your days at a slower pace whilst exploring the local scenery.

Sri Lanka

If you’re looking for perfect white sand beaches and a relaxed atmosphere, then Sri Lanka may well be the place for you. With its rich culture, tropical rain forests, beautiful beaches, and wildlife galore, it’s no wonder that so many people have chosen to make it their holiday paradise.

From surfing off the coast of Arugam Bay to taking a leisurely train ride through the hill country of Kandy, Sri Lanka has tons of incredible activities available that are guaranteed to keep any traveler occupied. And with plenty of accommodation options ranging from hostels to luxurious resorts and villas, you’re bound to find the perfect option for your budget and preferences.

This Southeast Asian country offers something for everyone – from shopping, fine cuisine and nightlife, to ancient temples,sanctuaries and stunning natural sites such as the Perhentian Islands. Plus, it’s very affordable for international tourists, meaning that you don’t have to come with a huge bank balance to have a good time.

The weather is mostly sunny all year round, so sun seekers will be glad to know that they can enjoy outdoor activities without worrying about the temperature. The locals also have a reputation for being friendly and approachable, which can be particularly reassuring for solo travelers. From bustling places like the capital of Kuala Lumpur and the state of Penang to rural areas with traditional villages and local markets, you’ll find interesting people and sights everywhere.
