The world’s top five: From Best Food to Best Beaches, these countries made my list

Here’s a fun parlor game I like to play when I’m with other travelers and the booze is starting to set in: What country has the best … (fill in the blank). It’s rapid fire questions: The best food, the best nature, the best beer. On a cold night in a bar in Oslo or on a beach in Indonesia, it’s a fun way to pass the time and get in friendly arguments.
More of these lists are cropping up on the Internet. I see the lists and either cringe or nod my head in agreement, thinking back to blissful experiences these lists inspire.
I’ve been to 117 countries. I’d like to think I have a broad range of insight into what pushes travelers back on the road. As summer travel season heads into its second half, here’s my list of the best the world has to offer in 10 categories.
Yes, there’s some Italian bias. But living here 12 years, I’ve earned my opinion.
Please leave a comment, in agreement or disagreement, or print this out, perforate it and put it on a roll:

Best beauty
- Switzerland. Gingerbread houses next to mountains and lakes.
- French Polynesia. Torch-lit beaches and sea the color of the perfect turquoise sky.
- Italy. Find an ugly city here. I dare you.
- Norway. Fjords and the midnight sun when sunsets last forever.
- Trinidad and Tobago. Forty different beaches on a 72-mile coastline on Tobago alone..

Best architecture
- United States. I’m a sucker for skylines.
- Italy. You must admire beautiful monuments that last for 2,000 years.
- United Arab Emirates. Garish and showy, I know, but Dubai and Abu Dhabi absolutely sparkle.
- Azerbaijan. Baku’s Flaming Towers are a nightly must.
- Uzbekistan. The mosques of Samarkand and the medieval city of Khiva are like stepping onto the old Silk Road.

Best nature
- Nepal. One word: Himalayas. Enough said.
- Ecuador. You can hike in the Andes one day, canoe down the Amazon the next and snorkel in the Galapagos Islands the next.
- United States. It has 63 national parks for a reason.
- Tanzania. The Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti are heaven for wildlife and mankind alike.
- Iceland. It has 130 volcanoes ringed by the sea.

Best beaches
- Seychelles Islands. And I never went to the outer islands which locals told me are even better.
- Bahamas. Sugar-white sand you could almost put on cereal.
- Trinidad and Tobago. See above.
- Indonesia. So many islands. So many memories.
- Greece. Get past the rocks and the water is like in French Polynesia.

Best food
- Italy. Hey, in 12 years here I’ve had maybe four bad meals.
- France. Better variety than Italy but it doesn’t have the consistency.
- Vietnam. If Mom made vegetables like the Vietnamese, I would’ve eaten them more.
- Hungary. Most underrated cuisine in Europe. It’s big flavor, feel-good food.
- India. From street stalls to Michelin-star restaurants, it’s all better than what I fell in love with in the U.S.

Best beer
- Belgium. Nearly all 1,600 beers have their own custom glass.
- United States. Seemingly every bar has its own beer and they got rid of the lousy ones.
- Germany. Oktoberfest is a once-in-a-lifetime must. Quality and quantity.
- Denmark. Carlsberg’s Elephant beer was my favorite beer for decades. Then I visited Belgium.
- Ireland. Once here, you can never drink a Guinness anywhere else.

Best wine
- Italy. Need you ask?
- France. I left my heart in Bourgogne country.
- Georgia. Khvanchkara semi-sweet red wine. Joseph Stalin did something right.
- Slovenia. Some of the best white blends in the world.
- Lebanon. Hey Israel. Leave the Bekaa Valley alone!

Best nightlife
- United States. Whatever you want, you can find it here. Some places at any hour.
- England. No easier place to get closer to local culture than the English pub.
- Mexico. How can you not have a good time with tequila?
- Greece. As the sun falls on the Aegean, so do inhibitions.
- Jamaica. Reggae allows you to dance and drink in the sand at the same time.

Friendliest people
- Italy. Twelve years here and except for an evil landlady, I have yet to meet a rude person. Honest.
- Sweden. Modesty is in their DNA.
- Saudi Arabia. The people aren’t the government, folks.
- Finland. They take their title as the World’s Happiest Country seriously.
- Malaysia. My favorite place to hitchhike.

Most beautiful women
- Russia. Unfortunately, most of them know it.
- Sweden. Fortunately, most of them don’t know it.
- Italy. My Marina moved this up the chart.
- Brazil. Mixed races form tantalizing combinations.
- Singapore. Asian beauties who dress to the nines.

Well written John and I agree to most of your selections.. The ones I don’t are subjective anyway but Israelis do bomb the Bekaa Valley often…

Actually, the winery I visited in December said their area hasn’t been touched.

Italians can’t be seriously rude!?! I beg to differ on that one. Of course I’m partisan but I’d personally put Ireland top of that particular list! Kazakstan and Lithuanian for the most beautiful women, added to your great list. And New Zealand for the most beautiful country. And indeed some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met. And I’d argue that Guinness isn’t a beer but a food group all on its own.

I was with a Kiwi on a scuba diving trip on the Great Barrier Reef. He was a dick. People don’t realize they’re mini ambassadors to their country. That week with that guy spoiled my impression of Kiwis.

The rudest persons I met in Italy were those who ran B&B. Literally was yelled at when arriving at one in Rome because I hadn’t checked in online. I shoukd have read the reviews before booking as I’d have been warned. The other contacted me on WhatsApp because he didn’t like my review. Scary might be a better word for these landlords. I was in Casablanca coming back from when an Italian couple started fighing in our van. It lasted 45 minutes. That I would call rude. They were loud!

That’s the beauty of travel. Everyone can have a different impression. Talk to someone else who’s lived in Rome 12 years. They could have a completely different view of Rome. Both of our views are valid.

New Zealand beauty and people deserve to be on this list. I’d also put Polish women in my top five. I’m also going to stick up for American women.

American women are too fat. So are the men. Face it. It’s a fat country. New Zealand? Maybe an oversight on my part.

I living in Italy who travels extensively, I would say that Italians are the rudest if you are not family. It’s like they have a switch from super nice to wanting to hit you with a shoe. I’ve never been scolded so openly in public by a store keeper whilst trying to hand them my cash. Lastly food is my passion and Italians do make touristic versions of their food and if you look closely these days many kitchens are no longer occupied by Italians. Japan has the best overall food. They can make any Style including an Italian dish and overlay their attention to detail and replication making it perfect by importing the Italian ingredients down to the San Marzano tomatoes, and making their own pasta.Same for Chinese, Indian. Etc Btw. I am an Italian.

I know a woman who moved to Rome and stayed only six months because the Italians were so rude. People who live next door to each other can have completely different experiences. I know where to eat in Italy so the food I eat has been excellent everywhere. I don’t need an Italian cook to make me great Italian food. The head cook at Necci dal 1924, which I ranked as my favorite restaurant in Rome one year, was a Pakistani. I interviewed him. He was great. Very knowledgeable.

Most beautiful women? “Most” is very subjective, especially when it applies to the feminine architecture and cover, and is likely influenced by our own cultural upbringing. Probably the better list would be by continent or general ethnicity? Columbia or Brazil in South America? Nordic/Scandinavian? North/Central America? Asian? Africa? Tropics? Western Europe, Eastern Europe? Each number one in each list would make it very hard for me to pick an “overall” number one. And, would a list of No. 1’s provided by women differ from a list provided by men?

By continents? Good idea. Beautiful women may be the most subjective list of them all. It so depends on one’s experiences. Who does one see? Who does one meet? I based my Russia as No. 1 on sitting at Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg’s Main Street. Just by appearance, I counted all the women I’d go out with as they walked by. It was the middle of a Russian winter. They were all bundled up. And I came up with 67 percent. In my park where I jogged in Denver, I did the same thing with women I ran by. They were fit. They were exercising. And it was rarely more than 33 percent.
